
HERFON convened a crucial round table discussion at its office, engaging 13 media professionals in discussions on the vital role of the media in promoting government investment in family planning. This media roundtable discussion was facilitated by Dr. Opeyemi Adeosun and Bukola Afeni, the session provided an opportunity to explore innovative strategies for using media to influence public health priorities.
Participants examined the state of family planning funding, identifying critical gaps and the need for ongoing advocacy to keep the issue at the forefront of government agendas. The conversation highlighted the transformative power of media through storytelling, in-depth reporting, and focused coverage to inform the public and drive policy changes in favour of family planning initiatives.
The dialogue also addressed key obstacles, such as misinformation, inadequate access to accurate data, and the necessity for improved communication skills in health advocacy. Suggestions included strengthening partnerships between journalists, health institutions, and policymakers, as well as promoting investigative journalism to bring critical family planning issues to light.
By the end of the meeting, participants expressed a strong commitment to using their platforms to advocate for increased government support and investment in family planning.
